ART THERAPY STUDIO: THE CONTEMPLATIVE NATURE OF THE EXPRESSIVE ARTS:
THE MYSTIC AND THE ARTIST [ARTST5863]
Dec 3-7, 2007 (Last Day to Register: Nov 2)
INTENSIVE COURSE

Instructor: Markus Alexander
The journey inward and a life of devotion can be given a face, a voice and a moving form. The arts have a long tradition within the life of the monk and mystic. Marsha Sinetar's book, Ordinary People as Monks and Mystics inspires and instructs us to see the contemporary approach to a life of devotion. With this text as inspiration, this course develops the students' capacity to move inward while creating paintings, songs, poems and dances. Approaches to using this work in a therapeutic context are discussed and explored. The expressive arts need not be of an extraverted nature; a quieted and gentled way of working is particularly appropriate in hospice work, care of the elderly, work in prisons, with the mentally ill and so forth. The student will end the course with an increased ability to create a contemplative studio atmosphere in his or her home and will also acquire many skills to apply in professional settings. Intermodal expressive arts therapy compliments the art therapy approach, developing and exploring other languages for our innermost Being desiring expression.
